Tuesday after the Epiphany of the Lord/  Memorial of Saint John Neumann, Bishop

“In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that He loved us” (1 Jn. 4:10). The uncomfortable reality is that even when we are inclined to love God, we have no idea how to love God. We respond to what we can see around us, what we know and can experience. We do not know God, and unless we know what we are looking for, we cannot experience God. We should find God lovable, and yet we do not.

Thankfully, our weakness is not the last word. God wants us to find Him lovable, and to be saved by loving Him. So God comes to us as an infant. Unlike God, babies can easily be seen and known and loved. Everything about our being and makeup inclines us to love babies. We cannot find God lovable on our own, so God devises a way to melt our hearts. God fights for our love. We need only surrender, and find our newborn Jesus adorable—in every sense of the word.
