Friday of the Third Week of Lent

How is it that the scribe is not far from the Kingdom of God? First we must consider what the Kingdom of God is; we might recall how just yesterday Jesus said that “every kingdom divded against its will be laid waste”; in other words, one of the traits of God’s Kingdom is unity—oneness—and it is a unity deeply rooted in love. We often forget that God desires the salvation of all (1 Timothy 2:4), and it is easy to get so wrapped up in trying to do right by God that doing right by our neighbor takes a far back seat. Granted, our love of God should always be first and foremost, but never at the exclusion of our neighbor; as Jesus says, “…whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me,” (Matthew 25:40). Our faith is not just God and myself, for Heaven will not merely be God and myself; we profess to believe in a communion of saints after all, and if we do not strive to live in peace with our fellow man here, how can we hope to do so for eternity? Thus Jesus sees in this scribe ground ripe for the planting of eternal life, for instead of going into some discourse on the details of the Law the scribe has discovered the truth: “…love is the fulfillment of the law,” (Romans 13:10).
