Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles

Today is the solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, two men who time and again experienced and preached the message of Jesus Christ: Salvation. Peter, saved from being a self-described “sinful man,” from perishing at sea, from his own pride and from his own shame of denying the Lord three times, and in today’s first reading, saved from the hand of Herod. Paul, saved from his arrogance, his blindness, from his self-righteous persecution of the Church.

Both witnessed the Risen One inviting them to a new way of life. This was a life that was not without trials or hardships, or harm to the body, but a life that would nevertheless bring salvation and life eternal. In holy reverence for the memory of these great saints, perhaps today we can pray and remember the many ways in which Christ, our Lord, has mercifully given us his salvation.

Saints Peter and Paul, pray for us!
