Thursday of the Fourteenth Week in Ordinary Time

More reflections today on yesterday’s topic of the vocation of the apostle, of each and every one of us. Jesus insists in today’s Gospel that the apostle should be a person of peace, and that he transmit that peace in all he says and does to those to whom he has been sent.

He should be a person who cultivates human, polite habits, for these are basically modes of acting in a charitable manner, of showing respect for others. Where do I best learn this manner of acting? It is in the Eucharist. It is here where I grow to live with Christ, for Christ and like Christ.  So, my frequent devotion to and reception of the Eucharist are essential for my becoming an apostle.

Christ also tells me I must be independent of any one mission. When the hour comes when I must change status, I do so with joy and confidence for my next task as an apostle. He tells me an apostle should always be independent of tasks, jobs and different places where he hangs his hat so that he can be more dependent on his heavenly Father, the one who hands out the assignments.
