Feast of Saints Simon and Jude, Apostles

The feast of any of the Apostles should remind us that Jesus was pulling from a weak bench. For those who are unfamiliar with sports analogy, this means that of the entire team, the prospects to put together the winning players against the enemy look rather bleak.  No doubt, the trauma of being last picked for the neighborhood baseball game still weighs heavy on many readers, or not being considered for an event and dealing with the trauma of being “passed over” for someone better. From what we can discern from the scriptures, the apostles were not exactly national merit semifinalists. The were not the intellectuals who commented on the scripture, nor were they government leaders. The only government leader Jesus called was a tax collector and that was about as socially low as you could get. With the great churches throughout the world dedicated to the various apostles it may blind us to their humble beginnings. To them was given God’ s grace, joined with human effort and something happened that was rather spectacular.
