Holy Saturday At the Easter Vigil in the Holy Night of Easter

Beside the two Marys and John, there were at least two other believers present at the crucifixion, witnesses to when the dead body of Jesus was placed in his mother’s arms.

Both had deep pockets.  Joseph of Arimathea led the mourners carrying Jesus’ body to his own reserved tomb. Nicodemus, a member of the politically elite, carried over a hundred pounds of perfumed spices to anoint the body of him who once said it was easier for a camel to enter the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter paradise, and blessed are the poor in spirit.

Holy Saturday invites many thoughts for meditation. One might be we seldom, if ever think about: the financially rich like Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea who live lives of spiritual poverty today, attentive to the needs of the Body of Christ, the Church: supporters of our parishes, schools, charitable activities.

Resolve: I’ll pray in a special way today for the financial rich who are poor in spirit, asking the Lord to bless them as he blessed Joseph and Nicodemus, and that their number increase.
