Wednesday of the Fourth Week of Easter
“I came into the world as light so that everyone who believes in me might not remain in darkness.”
These words of our Lord cut straight to the heart of his divine purpose in coming to earth to dwell with us and remind us of the need to consider the big picture of salvation history. Through our disobedience against God, we had cut ourselves off from Him in a way that we ourselves were powerless to reconcile. I think it’s profoundly important to recognize that at that juncture God could literally have done anything. He could easily have left us to our own devices and perpetual brokenness. In contrast to all of the other possibilities, however, it is incredible to contemplate the ardent, passionate love with which He has continued to pursue us. The fact that God desires relationship with us is a wonder that we should not fail to appreciate.
It is in this vein that we recognize that Jesus is truly the light who has come to dwell with us and to guide us into the loving arms of the Father and the Holy Spirit. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. He did not come for his own sake or his own glory. He came for us in order to bring us back to Himself. The coming of Christ was a rescue mission in which humanity was raised from the darkness of sin and error and through the Redemption we have been offered a new and eternal relationship with God. Let us therefore take time today to reflect on the incredible ways that God has pursued us in tenderness and mercy and to thank Him for his tireless attention to all of our needs as He works day by day to bring us to Himself.
