Friday of the Eleventh Week in Ordinary Time
Mr. Rogers is famously quoted for saying, “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping. ‘” These words can help to shift our perspective from one of utter darkness and tragedy to one that sees a certain light shining through.
In today’s gospel, Jesus tells us, “The lamp of the body is the eye.” How we see reality affects our body, our entire being. It can keep us in a place of darkness, fear, resentment, paralysis, or it can inspire us to live in the light, in love and in action.
The world can and will often seem like a dark place. But let us not forget that the world is also the place where we encounter God’s love and healing. The world is full of it. May we have eyes to find it, and may we have hearts, hands, and feet ready to help others see it as well.
