Feast of Saints Simon and Jude, Apostles
Jesus Christ is not a lens through which we see science or philosophy. He is not a lens through which we contemplate history or current events. He is not a lens at all, in the sense that He is not a means to anything else outside Himself. We don’t look at Him in order to see other things better. It’s the other way round. All creation is the lens through which we can see Him. All creation points to Him as both the alpha and the omega, the first and the last. (Rev 22:13). He is the capstone (Eph 2:20). All things were created through Him and for Him (Colossians 1:16). He is the ultimate object of all of our seeing. “Whoever sees me sees the Father,” He said (John 14:9), and “the Father and I are one” (John 10:30). There is no air between God the Father and God the Son.
The Son is the true light that enlightens every man (John 1:9). The light of Christ shines upon all creation. Today’s saints, Simon and Jude, bore witness to that light. If we would honor them, today, we must receive the light of Christ, a light which still shines even in the darkness. We must turn toward Christ with our hearts and minds, and ask him: lift up the light of your face upon us, O Lord (Psalm 4:6). Restore us, O God: let your face shine, and we shall be saved (Psalm 80:3).
