Wednesday of the Thirty-fourth Week in Ordinary Time

There is a striking image in Revelation today that pairs wonderfully with the Gospel, almost like a sequel. In the Gospel, Our King and Lord Jesus Christ promises his followers that the Holy Spirit will be with them in times of persecution as an aid in their witness for Christ.
In the book of Revelation, we see that those who “had won victory over the beast…were holding God’s harps and they sang…Great and wonderful are your works, Lord God almighty.” What a joyous image, that those who persevere against the beast are shown to be singing in heaven the song of Moses and the song of the lamb. The Holy Spirit who empowers us on earth to sing out our witness to the Lord – in good times and in and bad – continues inspiring our song before the throne of the lamb in the life that is to come.
What is at the core of this song and this heavenly witness? Praising God as King and ruler over heaven and earth and his wonderful works. This heavenly truth is precisely what we are called to witness in our daily lives, that Christ is King and his works are wonderful. We are one of those works. Let us pray, today, that our lives proclaim our belief in Christ’s kingship as our lives reveal the glory, mercy, and love of our God.
