The one who is infinite took on a finite form and walked among us. He was subject to the movements of the day, the sunrise, the sunset, the darkness in between. He came face to face with human poverty and sickness, but also with human faith and hope, and witnessed the beautiful things that God could do through these encounters.
Although, in today’s gospel everyone was looking for him. He knew he could not be everywhere at once. He didn’t grow up in the digital age where he could go live and broadcast his message to millions. At that time, there was no illusion of having access to practically everything in the palm of your hand when you pick up a smartphone.
With the limiting constraints of space and time – which exist to this day – what Jesus did have was access to the infinite mystery of the Father’s love in prayer. It’s the reason he would get up in the morning. It was this that set the tone for his day, clarified the meaning of his life, and helped him to live fully the limited time he lived with us on earth.
With open, empty hands and following his example, may we dedicate more time to connecting with the infinite.
