Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church
The memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, mother of the Church, is celebrated on the Monday after Pentecost. Today’s gospel tells of the moment in which Mary becomes the mother of the Redeemed just before her Son gives up the spirit on the Cross. The passage ends with blood and water flowing from the side of Jesus.
Perhaps you have seen the images of Mary at the foot of the Cross, chalice in hand, collecting the blood that flowed from Jesus’ side. Precious Blood, vehicle of the force of love and life that comes from the heart, witness to our vulnerability—so easily shed but carefully collected to become a source of refreshment for thirsting hearts. By it we become sharers in his force of love and life that come from the heart, his brothers and sisters with Mary our mother by our side. Like her, may we strive to always be vessels for Christ. Mary, Mother of the Church, pray for us!
