Tuesday of the Third Week of Advent

Both readings in today’s Mass give excerpts from Jesus’ genealogy. They stress how to appreciate that he was truly human; made, like all humans, from “the slime of the earth”. They also stress the role of family in forming one’s unique identity. Jesus was born and developed within a family structure, long before he carried out his public role of Savior.

Christmas is a feast of the family. Jesus introduces us to the Holy Family. Therefore, reflecting on our own family enables us to appreciate both who he is and who we are. So, Christmas joy is more than a sentimental focus on laughing children opening Christmas packages under a tree. But it is that too.

Each of us carries both the graces and the heavy load piled upon us by generations of forbearers. For this reason, in a spirit of thanksgiving, we can ask the Lord not only to come  at Christmas to come and save us, but to give us grace to appreciate how we have been formed and those responsible.

Resolve: I shall spend special time this season praying for families, especially that young married couples appreciate  the need for children.
