Friday of the Sixth Week in Ordinary Time
“What profit is there for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? What could one give in exchange for his life?” If only our possessions could extend our lives. If only our life, even a few seconds of it, could be bought.
Jesus’ questions today are a reminder of the finite, limited nature of our lives here on earth. If our hands are only reaching out to grasp and accumulate, it will all be in vain, it will all be lost. Life, which no human being walking on this earth demanded, is a gift to be received. But it is equally a gift to be given. At the end of our lives, all that we have not given will be lost. But if our life is given generously, open-handedly, then it will surely live on, it will surely be saved.
