Tuesday of the Eighth Week in Ordinary Time
“gird up the loins of your mind, live soberly” (1 Peter 1:13)
When you can afford to be sloppy, you can have long robes. In the Old Testament, when you do not have a long journey to make, or a city to defend, etc. then you don’t have to worry about how conducive your garments are to action. When something important has to be done, however, then one’s tunic cannot be allowed to get in the way, but one must hitch it up and tie it securely.
Given that prophets searched and angels longed to know the revelation of the God who has so fully revealed Himself to us, we are now entrusted with an important task. We cannot be sloppy either in how we think or in how we live. “The Lord has made known His salvation.” (Psalm 98:2) Knowing this salvation which is revealed in Christ Jesus, we need to be ready to make sacrifices like Peter was. Yet, if we take our Lord seriously and live soberly, and if we focus our minds, our hearts, our energy, our lives on God, then we will be listening when our Lord offers eternal life, as He did to Peter and the others.
