Monday of the Eighth Week in Ordinary Time
“Although you have not seen him you love him.
Even though you do not see him now yet you believe in him.” (1 Peter 1:8)
If you were asked to close your eyes, and simply try to recognize a family member simply by the sound of their voice, would you be able to pick out who the person was? Most of us would be able to recognize our family members by their tone of voice, their words, their quirky ways of inhaling before they speak, etc. Even if we had been born without the sense of sight, the many years shared with these loved ones would make their presence recognizable through ways other than seeing.
We do not get to exercise our physical sight on God, nor do we get to see Jesus as His disciples did. Yet, perhaps that is not what we need. After all, the rich young man saw Jesus, heard the sound of His voice, but still failed to recognize Jesus as one who is lovable beyond all wealth and possessions. We may have all five senses, we may keep all 10 commandments, but if we do not recognize that the God of Love always has His eye upon us, then the one thing necessary is still missing. Let us ask God for the gift which faith brings, the opportunity to love the one who loves us unseen.
