Memorial of Saints Timothy and Titus, bishops

Yesterday I asked myself: How can I better receive and understand the word of God? The lesson in today’s Gospel may help me answer that question.

Here Jesus condemns a life that reflects solely upon itself. I cannot selfishly keep to myself what has been freely given to me. So, doesn’t it follow that when I receive a fuller measure of the Word of God, I must resolve to communicate it to others by word and deed? If the Word of God enlightens my existence, am I not called to transmit the same to others who seek light and encouragement?

No one gives what he hasn’t got. But I have been given so much. To be an authentic messenger of the Gospel, I must let the Gospel message animate my life more and more. In prayer I can measure my weakness, but I must not give up.

Resolved: I must pray for the power to share with others what I have been given. I cannot allow myself to be “placed under a bushel basket or under a bed,” selfishly hugging to myself the light of faith I have received.
