Tuesday of the Twelfth Week in Ordinary Time

We learn in the first reading that Abram was very rich. But he obviously was not attached to his wealth for he allowed Lot to choose whatever half of the acreage that would be his. Lot laid claim to the richer section where he “settled among the cities of the Plain.”

Attractive as this new sedentary life was, there were challenges for Lot and his people. The Canaanite cities presented queries to their religious beliefs, while the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah were challenges to their morals. Deprived of luxuries, Abram’s people were herdsmen, spared of the luxuries of sedentary living.

In our country today, most of us can better identify with Lot’s way of life. Thank God for his generosity to us as a nation. But our Catholic millennials especially are victimized by choices in the cities of the Plain. Their religious beliefs are scoffed at; their morals debunked.

Let us pray today that they do not opt exclusively for “The Lot Option”, but that they may learn true Catholic doctrine and right morals in those schools of the Plain that claim to be Catholic.
