Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord
Peter finally did get the point. Twenty years later, he can still recall the words of the Father that “this is my Son, my beloved, in whom I am well pleased” (2 Pt. 1:17; Cf. Mk. 9:7). He still remembers who Jesus is, and how He showed His identity. In this moment of the Transfiguration, Jesus manifested His identity in power. The Cross is not far off in this moment, but it will not overcome Jesus’ power.
Decades later, even Peter still remembers. The memory of that moment, and the experience of who Jesus is, sustained Peter’s faith through trials and sufferings. It will even carry Peter through His own martyrdom. Peter can die with the confidence that Christ’s power cannot be overcome by death, a confidence born from experiences like the Transfiguration. What experiences of Jesus’ power have shown you clearly who He is? How might those experiences sustain your faith in trials, even unto death?
