Tuesday in the Octave of Easter
“See, the eyes of the Lord are upon those who fear him, upon those who hope for his kindness…” (Ps 33:18)
Jesus saw Mary before Mary saw Jesus. Even though as she was looking at the tomb she did not know that He was risen, that He was there, that He could see her, that He was just waiting to console her, His eyes were upon Mary. Given her understandable weeping, and the natural assumption that Jesus’ body had been taken, we can sympathize with Mary when she does not recognize Jesus right away. Again, however, the psalmist holds his portrait of God before us and we see how perfectly it depicts our risen Lord: “See, the eyes of the Lord are upon those who fear him, upon those who hope for his kindness…” (Ps 33:18) The eyes of our mind may be distracted by many things, same with the eyes of our heart. Yet, today, let us take a moment to know that like Mary, wherever our attention may be, the eyes of the Lord are upon us, waiting to meet our eyes; He is waiting to speak our name, and to send us to bring His joy to His brothers and sisters.
