Monday of the Twenty-sixth Week in Ordinary Time

When the disciples argued about which among them was the greatest, our Lord placed a child by his side and responded to them by saying “whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.” This raises a very poignant and important point – do we really see Christ in one another as we go about our daily business? Do we see his image, dignity, majesty, beauty, and divinity in other people? Do we treat the people we encounter in our everyday lives with the courtesy, patience, reverence, and generosity that we would treat our Lord Himself?

In his book The Weight of Glory, C.S. Lewis reminds of an essential truth – that next to the Blessed Sacrament itself, our neighbor is the holiest object presented to our human senses. It’s so tempting to focus on the faults, flaws, or other shortcomings that we perceive in others, but we need to constantly remind ourselves that God’s own divinity is present in the soul of each and every human person.

Let us pray today for the grace to see the world anew and to recognize the goodness and glory of God in each and every person we encounter.
